Issue 7: Miseducation

Our upcoming issue is for those who are frustrated. Frustration calls us to attention, to action, and to organize.

We have been miseducated about ourselves and our freedom. We’ve been taught to be comfortable with our conditions. Now, we want our power back. How have our leaders and teachers confused us, missguided us and made us apathetic to our struggle for freedom?

The information we need is being withheld. This is a real obstacle in the way of our liberation. Who wins when we are disillusioned, defeated and passive to our exploitation? Who is making money when our ability to think for ourselves is taken from us?

1919 is looking for cultural work that asks us how we can fight back against everything that keeps us from building the world we dream about. We’re looking for works that ask us how we fight back with what we know, not what we have been programmed with. How do we resist with what we already have?

Guiding Questions

These questions are not an assignment. You have the questions and the answers. These are starting points for you to use as you need.

  • Where is information hiding? How does school defeat us? How do universities shut some of us out?

  • Who are the false prophets misleading us? Misgoverning us?

  • What lies does the Black community fall prey to, over and over again?

  • How does education about Africa and African diasporas & peoples impact the way we build solidarity & community?

  • Why do we look to celebrities and the 1% for political guidance?

  • Who wins in a hustle culture? How do our ideas about money and scarcity affect how we see our futures? What does generational wealth really mean?

  • How does liberalism co-opt, misrepresent and water down our political demands?

  • The personal is political. How do our ideas about who our family are and who our friends are influence the way we build community?

  • How does miseducation about our own bodies and healthcare put our lives at risk?

  • How do systemic forces keep us alienated from communal care?

  • How do we protect our youth from miseducation?

  • Who are the teachers, elders and organizers who dared to think differently and were hunted down for it? How do we honor them by continuing to educate ourselves?

  • What are we doing to get ourselves to our radical future?

  • How does our art help us get free?
