1919Radio was initially started to challenge anti-black club spaces in Toronto by hosting a community-based platform for independent DJs. An initiative aiming to give back creative control to artists and DJs who were looking for opportunities where their independence was respected and their work was fairly compensated. Building on this legacy and 1919’s interdisciplinary framework, we’re introducing conversations on our radio to ground and connect all of our projects as fundamentally rooted in anti-colonial resistance, radical political education, and cooperative community power.
